Dr Richard Francis
Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine
Our highly specialised multi-disciplinary team provides rehabilitation for people prior to, during and following an amputation, and for people who are born with congenital limb differences.
Our team has a wealth of experience in managing patients with single and multi-level limb absence, including both upper and lower limbs. We also have experience in the management of a wide range of amputation techniques including rehabilitation following osseo-integration implants.
During your initial consultation you will be evaluated by a multidisciplinary team, this will include a consultant in rehabilitation medicine, physiotherapist and prosthetist. Depending on your individual needs, you may also be seen by our occupational therapists.
Our Rehabilitation Consultant will begin with a comprehensive review of your medical history and current medications to understand your health background fully. Following this, the team will conduct a physical and functional assessment to further inform our recommendations for treatment. You will receive a detailed report outlining our assessment findings, and we will make sure you receive the information you need throughout the process. Through this collaborative approach we aim to empower you to make informed decisions about your care.
At RNOH Private Care, we provide tailored rehabilitation for individuals with lower limb conditions or limb absence. You will be assessed by our experienced multidisciplinary team who will design a personalised rehabilitation plan based on your goals. Whether you choose a residential stay or attend as an outpatient, you will have access to specialist equipment including the Motor Learning Lab, Vector Gait System and Aspire Leisure Centre.
Our therapy team, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists and rehabilitation assistants, will support you throughout your journey. We offer pre-prosthetic training, gait and balance re-education and wheelchair skills development. Your care will include pain management, treatment for surgical scarring and post-operative swelling, along with a customised exercise programme and education to support long-term management of limb absence.
RNOH Private Care offers advanced prosthetic technology for lower limb users. We provide a wide range of prosthetic solutions, including upper limb, lower limb, and specialised sports prostheses. Our consultants and prosthetists work with each patient to select the most suitable option, taking into account lifestyle, activity level, and medical needs.
The process begins with a thorough assessment and measurement to ensure the prosthesis fits comfortably and securely. Our on-site prosthetics team then creates a customised device, followed by adjustments and training sessions. Rehabilitation specialists support you in learning to use the prosthesis effectively in daily life.
Adjustment time varies from person to person, depending on the type of prosthesis and individual activity levels. Most patients require a structured rehabilitation programme lasting several weeks to months. At RNOH, our physiotherapists and occupational therapists provide tailored training and ongoing support to help you adapt as quickly and comfortably as possible.
Many patients successfully return to their usual routines and even competitive sports with the right prosthetic limb and training. RNOH offers access to specialist prostheses designed for activities like running, swimming, or cycling, supported by rehabilitation teams to help you achieve your goals.
Prosthetic limbs typically require adjustments over time to maintain a comfortable and effective fit. Factors like weight changes, activity levels, and natural wear can affect performance. On average, a prosthetic socket may need replacing every 3–5 years, though components such as feet or knees may last longer. Our team provides regular check-ups to ensure your prosthesis continues to meet your needs.
At RNOH, care doesn’t stop once your prosthesis is fitted. We offer ongoing support including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, gait training, and access to counselling services where needed. Our goal is to ensure every patient achieves the highest possible quality of life.
