The procedure

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat a range of knee conditions, including meniscal tears, cartilage damage, loose bodies and persistent pain or swelling. It is recommended when symptoms do not improve with non‑surgical treatment or when imaging suggests an injury that may benefit from surgical management.

The procedure involves inserting a small camera (arthroscope) and fine surgical instruments into the knee through tiny incisions, allowing the surgeon to assess the joint and treat the problem with precision. At RNOH Private Care, knee arthroscopy is performed by specialist Orthopaedic Consultants with extensive experience in both routine and complex knee conditions.

Before surgery

Your journey begins with a specialist consultation and thorough assessment to confirm that knee arthroscopy is the most appropriate treatment option. Diagnostic imaging, such as X‑rays or MRI scans, may be used to understand the underlying cause of your symptoms and help your consultant plan a targeted arthroscopic procedure.

During surgery

Knee arthroscopy is usually carried out under general or regional anaesthetic. The surgeon makes small incisions around the knee to insert the arthroscope and miniature instruments. Depending on your condition, treatment may involve trimming or repairing cartilage, smoothing joint surfaces, removing loose fragments or addressing inflammation. The goal is to relieve pain, improve movement and support long‑term joint health.

After surgery and recovery

Most patients go home the same day and can begin gentle movement shortly after the procedure. Recovery is typically faster than with open surgery, with minimal scarring and reduced post‑operative discomfort. A personalised rehabilitation plan, supported by physiotherapists helps restore strength, flexibility and confidence in the knee. Follow‑up appointments ensure your recovery progresses safely and effectively.

Frequently asked questions

Talk to us

01What conditions can knee treatments address?

Knee treatments are used to relieve pain, improve movement and restore function when knee problems begin to affect everyday life. Treatment options range from non-surgical care through to knee replacement surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.

02How is my knee condition diagnosed?

Diagnosis typically involves a detailed clinical assessment supported by imaging such as X-rays, MRI scans, or CT scans. These investigations help specialists accurately identify the cause and severity of your knee condition.

03Will I always need surgery?

Not all knee conditions require surgery. Many patients benefit from non-surgical options such as physiotherapy, pain management, lifestyle modifications, or guided injections. Surgery is recommended only when conservative treatments are no longer effective or when the condition requires surgical intervention.

04What should I expect during recovery?

Recovery depends on the type of treatment or surgery performed. Your consultant will explain expected recovery timelines, rehabilitation requirements, and any temporary activity limitations to support healing.

05Can I fund my own treatment? And do you have payment options to spread the cost?
