What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways. It varies in severity — from mild cases that require only observation to more complex curves needing surgical correction. Treatment decisions are based on age, curve progression, and spinal flexibility.

Non-surgical treatment options

For mild scoliosis, particularly in children and teens, regular monitoring may be sufficient to track any curve progression. Bracing is often recommended in moderate cases for growing patients to prevent the curve from worsening. Though braces don’t correct existing curvature, they can reduce the need for surgery later.

Physical therapy and targeted exercises are also commonly used to:
Strengthen supporting muscles
Improve posture
Relieve discomfort associated with scoliosis

Surgical treatment options

In more severe or progressive scoliosis, surgery may be recommended. The most common approach is spinal fusion, which involves correcting the curve using rods and bone grafts to stabilise the spine.

For eligible patients, vertebral body tethering (VBT) offers a newer, less invasive option. VBT allows for continued spinal growth and mobility, making it particularly suitable for certain younger patients.
