Surgery is usually considered when non-surgical treatment has not brought sufficient improvement. The aim is to relieve symptoms, prevent further deterioration and restore hand and wrist function.
Depending on the condition, one or more surgical techniques may be used. These can include:
• Carpal tunnel release to ease pressure on the median nerve by opening the tight band of tissue at the wrist
• Cubital tunnel release to relieve compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow
If you smoke, your surgeon may advise postponing surgery unless you can refrain from smoking before and during recovery. Evidence shows that smoking slows healing and increases the risk of complications.
Carpal tunnel release is a procedure that relieves pressure on the median nerve at the wrist. It is used to treat symptoms such as numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand. The surgery creates more space within the carpal tunnel, which helps restore comfort and function.
Cubital tunnel release treats compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. This procedure reduces nerve irritation that can cause pain, tingling or reduced strength in the hand and forearm. It aims to protect nerve health and improve day to day movement.
Not all hand and wrist conditions require surgery. Many patients benefit from non-surgical options such as physiotherapy, pain management, lifestyle modifications, or guided injections. Surgery is recommended only when conservative treatments are no longer effective or when the condition requires surgical intervention.
Recovery depends on the type of treatment or surgery performed. Your consultant will explain expected recovery timelines, rehabilitation requirements, and any temporary activity limitations to support healing.
