The procedure

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) repair or reconstruction is performed to restore knee stability, reduce pain and support a return to normal movement after an ACL tear. It is most commonly recommended following sports injuries, sudden twisting movements or trauma that results in instability or the knee “giving way,” especially when non-surgical treatment has not improved symptoms.

The procedure involves repairing the torn ligament or reconstructing it using a graft, often taken from the patient’s own tendon or from a donor. At RNOH Private Care, ACL surgery is carried out by specialist Orthopaedic Consultants with extensive experience in managing both routine and complex ligament injuries.

Before surgery

Your journey begins with a specialist consultation and comprehensive assessment to confirm that ACL repair or reconstruction is the most appropriate treatment option. This may include imaging such as MRI scans to evaluate the extent of the ligament injury and help your consultant plan a personalised surgical approach.

During surgery

ACL repair or reconstruction is typically performed under general or regional anaesthetic. Using minimally invasive keyhole (arthroscopic) techniques, the torn ligament is either repaired or replaced with a graft positioned and fixed securely to restore stability to the knee. The aim is to support natural movement, prevent further instability and protect long‑term joint health.

After surgery and recovery

Most patients are encouraged to begin weight‑bearing and gentle movement shortly after surgery, under the guidance of experienced physiotherapists. Your rehabilitation plan is tailored to your individual needs and may include outpatient physiotherapy, follow‑up assessments and structured exercises aimed at rebuilding strength, stability and confidence in the knee. Return to sport typically follows a phased approach once healing and strength milestones are achieved.

الأسئلة الشائعة

تحدث إلينا

01What conditions can knee treatments address?

Knee treatments are used to relieve pain, improve movement and restore function when knee problems begin to affect everyday life. Treatment options range from non-surgical care through to knee replacement surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.

02How is my knee condition diagnosed?

Diagnosis typically involves a detailed clinical assessment supported by imaging such as X-rays, MRI scans, or CT scans. These investigations help specialists accurately identify the cause and severity of your knee condition.

03Will I always need surgery?

Not all knee conditions require surgery. Many patients benefit from non-surgical options such as physiotherapy, pain management, lifestyle modifications, or guided injections. Surgery is recommended only when conservative treatments are no longer effective or when the condition requires surgical intervention.

04What should I expect during recovery?

Recovery depends on the type of treatment or surgery performed. Your consultant will explain expected recovery timelines, rehabilitation requirements, and any temporary activity limitations to support healing.

05Can I fund my own treatment? And do you have payment options to spread the cost?
